In the new romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, Steve Carell plays Cal Weaver, the standard issue suburban dad, whose life is capsized when his wife (Julianne Moore) admits to an affair and calls for a divorce. Cal, realizing that perhaps the best way to get over someone is to get under someone (he’s right), retreats into the dim light of the cocktail bar, where Ryan Gosling’s suave character, Jacob Palmer, takes pity on the fish out of water and takes him under his proverbial wing. What ensues is a series of lessons on how to talk to women, how to dress, how to act, and how to get your hair cut. But is changing the way you look enough to change the way you feel and the way others feel about you? Maybe. Here's to trying.

Male makeovers

It's amazing how much a change in your everyday appearance can inject a whole new sense of energy and confidence into your attitude. Not convinced? Well, if it's taking you longer to leave for work lately or you're simply tired of your reflection, then you're about ready for a male makeover.

Your hairstyle

We'll begin with one of the most crucial parts of your overall look: your hairstyle. Hair can make or break your style. If you don't know that yet, then you've been going to the wrong hair stylist. That's right, the word "style" is right there in the job description. So if you've been going to the same barber for the past 20 years with the sole purpose of cutting your hair, then you have to let someone shape and mold your hair. Hey, some consider hairstyling an art form, so bear with me here.

It's time to head to your local hair salon (either unisex or just for men) and trust a hair stylist to give you a new look. Tell them what you want, and they'll be able to tell you whether the style will suit your face and hair type. Make sure to specify that you want a change, but emphasize how drastic you'd like it to be. I'm assuming you want a low-maintenance style, because adding 20 minutes to your morning is something no guy wants to do.

Another important factor to keep in mind is your job as well as your environment. You might have the most avant-garde look to hit the fashion runway in years, but if you live in Small Town, America, you and your hair will look out of place. As well, if you work in a professional environment, then you might want to reconsider a funky mohawk.

While your hair is being played with, look into facial hair styling changes. Ask your hair stylist what they suggest for your new cut and style, and consider getting rid of your goatee, beard, moustache, sideburns or whatever whiskers are on your mug. Saying sayonara to your 'stache can do wonders.
