Jeremy Scott's Smart

Smart car has found a way to fashionize its line of electric cars. Fashion designer Jeremy Scott teamed up the car manufacturer to release smart forjeremy which was unveiled in Los Angeles in November 2012 and recently made an appearance in New York City during Fashion Week. The car marks the first time a fashion designer was allowed to make changes to a car’s actual body and Scott didn’t hesitate to add his own flair to the efficient vehicle.

 

 

 

Jeremy Scott has become known for the wings that make an appearance on sweatshirts, sunglasses and sneakers in his many fashion collections. Building on his trademark, wings are a central feature of the smart forjeremy car design. One transparent, red fiberglass wing expands off each of the back side panels, not only adding a decorative touch, but also serving as rear and brake lights. Scott explains, “For me, wings mean freedom, a sense of weightlessness. Because of this, I definitely wanted to have them for the smart electric drive in order to convey the way it frees the environment of noxious emissions and symbolizes the new lightness of mobility.”
Having designed unique costumes for the likes of Lady Gaga, Madonna, Katy Perry and Rihanna, Scott also knows the importance of adding fun to any experience and he has certainly done so for driving. For instance, above smart forjeremy’s headlights, two shapely “eyebrows” give the car an expression of curiosity and joy. Drivers are invited to take hold of the two chrome spokes of the white steering wheel which remains open at the top. The outer wheel rims are shaped like airplane propellers and jet engine shaped side air inlets complete the wing theme in the interior. Adding to the light, aerodynamic feel, the car is white with chrome accents, re-emphasizing its relatively clean environmental footprint.
The two-seater features a 55 kW electric motor that runs off a 17.6 kWh lithium-ion battery and can run about 122 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPGe) in city traffic without producing local emissions. Better yet, the car accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 11.5 seconds and can reach a maximum speed of 78 mph.
As the prototype continues to make its rounds across the globe, Tokyo will be the next to receive the car just in time for its March 2013 Fashion Week. Perhaps this latest incarnation of haute couture will be next to hit the runway as design disciplines become increasingly intertwined. Smart plans to launch a limited special edition in 2013.
