Chanel was probably thinking of bracelets and baubles when she famously
said, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take at least
one thing off.” But good advice is good advice, and this minimal-minded
mantra works just as well for an apartment.
She was a fashion icon, but Chanel knew a thing or two about decorating a home, too. Her opulent Paris apartment
at 31 Rue Cambon is a pilgrimage for globe-trotting fashion lovers (the
photo of her at top was shot in her private apartment by Douglas Kirkland in 1962). While it's not quite my taste, I can appreciate that as luxurious and extravagant as it is, it doesn't feel overdone.
now. But if you love to collect, and your home decorating style follows a
"more is more" philosophy, Chanel's advice for dressing a body can just
as easily help edit a room. Just take one thing off. Remove a loud
pillow or one of the playful objets on the mantle.
