Despite being all but crowned this year’s breakout fashion (and, lest we forget, film) star, don’t expect Lupita Nyong’o to start dishing her style secrets any time soon. In the cover story for New York Magazine ‘s Spring Fashion issue, the 12 Years a Slave actress showed a studied restraint in talking about her personal life, declining to disclose the details of her morning routine and what goes on during meetings with her stylist. As she tells the magazine, “I don’t know why, but I like to keep that part of it very intimate and very small.”
A bummer, yes. But it only adds another measure of mystery to the actress’s much buzzed-about image. In an age of fashion stars crafted by stylists, it’s nice to at least believe that Kenyan Nyong’o arrived in Hollywood already inclined to wear a bright red Ralph Lauren cape .
Nyong’o positively glows in her corresponding New York spread, donning a brightly colored mix of Armani, Stella McCartney, Balenciaga and, of course , Miu Miu. Those massive Chanel pearls , in hot competition with Nyong’o for the title of 2014′s fashion darling, also make an appearance.
As for what we might expect to see Nyong’o donning on a future red carpet?Don’t rule out a big, feminine hat. During her interview, the actress took writer Alex Morris along with her to see the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. Said Nyong’o, pointing to a large black and white hat: “Why oh why don’t we wear hats like that? It reminds me of My Fair Lady.” Fashionista
