Anna Wintour backs Hillary Clinton at Oscar de la Renta exhibit opening

Hillary Clinton may have already secured a powerful and perfectly-bobbed backer if she decides to run for president in 2016. Clinton, her family and special guest Anna Wintour welcomed a new Oscar de la Renta exhibit to the William J. Clinton Presidential Center Monday night that includes more than 30 iconic pieces by the famed designer and Clinton favorite. 
In a speech during the opening reception, Wintour hinted she may want to see Clinton back on the campaign trail — and ultimately in the Oval Office.
“It’s anyone’s guess what the next chapter will be for this extraordinary woman,” Wintour said. “I can only hope that all of you here in Little Rock will be celebrating her come November 2016.”
The kind words could be more than mere talk. As Post writer Katherine Boyle reported last summer, the fashion industry had deep ties to the Obama campaign, which resulted in some serious fundraising. In June 2012, Wintour stumped with Obama in Chicago; then the storied editor hosted a $40,000-a-plate fundraising dinner with Sarah Jessica Parker in New York. Wintour put Hillary Clinton on the cover of Vogue for the first time in 1998, making her the first sitting first lady to grace the cover. And fittingly, she was dressed in de la Renta.

The de la Renta exhibit, which was curated by Vogue’s Andre Leon Talley, will be open to guests through December 1 and features gowns, as well as designs from runway collections.

One of Clinton’s infamous pants suits — a matching teal suit she wore while being sworn in as senator  — is included in the collection, as is a red cashmere ensemble worn by Laura Bush and Nancy Reagan’s beige coat and matching dress. Notably absent in the first lady line-up is Michelle Obama, who has yet to wear a garment by the designer. Perhaps de la Renta will be hoping for a Clinton presidential run as well.
