Your bed is always made, toilet bowl polished, and coffee table styled just so, but is your house really
clean? Filth can quietly build up in unexpected places, from the decor
to the appliances. Read on to discover the most overlooked spots to
clean — and to learn how you can get them back in tip-top shape.

Coffeemaker

If your morning java is starting to taste funky, it's probably
because your coffeemaker is in need of a cleaning. Hard-water deposits
and brewing residue can take over your machine if you don't wash it
every month or so by running a 50-50 mix of white vinegar and water
through the brew cycle. Turn off the machine halfway through brewing,
and let it sit for an hour before turning it back on to complete the
cycle. Then run fresh water through it a few times until the vinegar
smell is gone. The carafe and filter can be cleaned in the dishwasher.

Throw Pillows

You know it's important to clean your bedroom pillows, but what about
those stylish throw pillows on your sofa? Whether you're using them to
prop up your feet after a long day or rest your head during a Netflix
binge, they're collecting the same (if not more) dead skin, dust mites,
and filth. Be sure to run the vacuum's upholstery attachment over
pillows when cleaning the living room, and remove pillow covers for
periodic laundering according to the care instructions.

Kitchen Trash Can

Is that foul odor lingering even after you take the trash out? It
could be leftover food debris and bacteria that have made their way into
the trash can. Get it clean by hosing out any gunk before spraying with
a disinfectant and an odor-eliminating product and giving it a thorough
scrub down.

Curtains and Upholstery

They might look clean to the naked eye, but curtains and upholstery
trap everything from pollen and dust mites to bacteria and mold. Take
the vacuum to them regularly, and for especially dirty fabrics, check
the label to see if washing or professional cleaning is an option.

Dishwasher

This one might seem counterintuitive, but even dish-cleaning machines
require cleaning. Dishwashers get clogged with food debris, soap scum,
hard-water deposits, and even mold. Start by cleaning out the filter of
the dishwasher — yes, your dishwasher has a filter, and if this is the
first time you're learning of it, odds are yours is clogged with old
food particles — and then run a heavy-duty cleaning agent through the
wash cycle. We're partial to baking soda bombs.

Bathroom Decor

From the cup you hold your toothbrush in to the glass jars atop the
toilet, you would be surprised how bacteria spreads around the bathroom.
Give all your bathroom accessories a good antiseptic rubdown when
you're cleaning the bathroom.

Washing Machine

If you've ever noticed that your clothes smell less than fresh after
being washed, then it's probably time to clean your washing machine.
With all the water and damp clothes that go through them, these machines
are especially susceptible to mold and mildew. You can clean your washing machine by running a mix of white vinegar and baking soda through the hottest cycle available.

Knobs, Handles, and Switches

Based on the number of dirty hands grabbing at them, knobs, handles,
and light switches seem like an obvious place to disinfect, but they're
frequently overlooked. Don't forget to address these bacteria hot spots
when wiping down places like the kitchen and bathroom.

Developed by Studio 15b for a retired couple, the Golf House
in Brisbane, Australia is a modern residence overlooking a beautiful
golf course. The project was planned on a single level, with no internal
stairs. This idea was driven from the clients’ request of having a
user-friendly home they could feel comfortable in for a long period of
time: “The final result is one of light filled luxury, with a relaxed
natural feel of stone, timber and glass that takes advantage of a
beautiful treed outlook. It has been purposed designed to take this
retired couple long into their life with plenty of space to entertain
along the way while making the most of the golf course lifestyle”,
explained the architects.

The
golf course is the protagonist around which the house layout was
creatively imagined: “Visitors are welcomed with a view from the entry
directly down the centre of the exterior swimming pool and the treed
outlook beyond. The entry space divides the home between the private
spaces such as bedrooms and bathrooms from the public zones of open
planned living, dining and kitchen. The polished timber floor of the
entry also delineates the public and private spaces and continues,
following the view, externally to the pool decking.” We love how this
home design derived from the owner’s love for golf brings the whole
family together in a relaxed, healthy environment! [Photos by: Christopher Frederick Jones]
Arizona’s capital city will soon get a 70,000-square-foot addition to
its skyline, a spiraling walkway stretching toward the clouds. Three
glass elevators lead to the helical apex, with retail, exhibition and
recreation spaces at the base. BIG Architects
envision it as a pin on the map, which “becomes a point of reference
and a mechanism to set the landscape in motion through the movement of
the spectator.”
While most lookout towers are positioned in parks, nature preserves and
other natural areas, this one is in a distinctly urban location – the
city of Brighton. Looking out onto both the cityscape and the sea, the
531-foot-tall i360 Tower
will be Britain’s highest observation tower outside of London. The
glass pod that slides up the pole base can accommodate up to 200 people
at a time and takes around 10 minutes to reach the peak.
piping systems that absorb, store and deliver water when a fire is
detected. The design of the base intends to have the smallest possible
impact on the land.
Proposed for Canal Street in New Orleans, the Tricentennial Tower
features a double-helix design with individual glass gondolas spiraling
up to the top 320 feet in the air. The movement of the gondolas as well
Sculptor and architect Anish Kapoor added quite an unusual shape to London’s skyline for the 2012 Olympic Games. The twisting ArcelorMittal Orbit tower
is made of 60% recycled steel and reaches a height of 114.5 meters (376
feet). Britain’s largest piece of public art, the tower was inspired by
both the Tower of Babel (with Kapoor stating that he wanted to a
structure with “something mythic about it”) and the movements of an
electron cloud.
juts into the sky from a cultural park just off one of the city’s
geometric pattern, while the tower itself is comprised of six 30-meter
diameter tubes that act as a ‘circulation system’ containing elevators
and stairways. The tubes expand into three petal-like shapes which
function as open-air observation decks cantilevering 70 meters in each
Last night’s Met Gala was a real yawn. The theme—China: Through the Looking Glass—threatened to be a hot pot of tacky appropriation, but instead celebrities erred on the side of average, dressing in clothes that were obviously unfit and much too unambitious for the fête of the year.

was filed this March 19 and describes the new window as a “method for
interactive visualization of information in an aircraft cabin.” Perhaps
that doesn’t sound romantic, but it could mean that when we fly over the
Eiffel Tower, we need only tap our window to learn how it was built,
and, possibly, prompt the paper-thin OLED display on the seat back in
front of us to play Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron on a musical romp
through the City of Lights. Perhaps, by the time the aircraft of
tomorrow flies, no one will get that reference, but it won’t matter—the
songs sing for themselves.
Airbus’ vision for the aircraft of tomorrow is light open space, with plenty of room to stretch out and enjoy the skies.

The filing of this patent reflects the manufacturer’s confidence in
that unique vision, which is a positive development for all of us
wondering how the industry which went from wooden airframes to the
Concorde in 60 years will surpass that amazing accomplishment.
The latest development in in-flight entertainment (IFE)—a sleek
product named iPAX—wants to make it impossible for airlines to ignore
the large number of passengers sitting on their planes staring at
some-shade-of-blue covers on the seat in front of them.

The new iPAX by Lumexis
is a modern wIFE (wireless IFE) system which offers passengers a
selection of high-definition entertainment on thin, light-weight
seat-back screens. As a plus for passengers, wIFE systems don’t need
those under-seat boxes which gobble-up precious legroom.
Besides entertainment content, airlines can display moving maps, add
food and beverage menus, and play amusing safety videos on the iPAX
system (as long as they’re Air New Zealand or a Virgin brand).

Lumexis’ product pitch is meant to tempt cost-conscious airlines by
using words like “ultra-low cost” and “light-weight,” two sure-fire
winners. But iPAX’s creators back up their marketing-speak with
impressive numbers. The ultra-low price is $1,495 a pop and the
ultra-light weight is 8.9 ounces.

If you’re wondering why $1,495 for something smaller than a tablet is
a good deal, we should explain that aircraft interiors products are
pricey: very pricey compared to consumer products. Aviation
certification requirements make research, development, and production
expensive. As aircraft interiors products go, this price is a bargain.

The iPAX’s screens project 1080 pixel video and options include a
2.1A USB charging port and a credit card reader to encourage that
in-flight shopping. Lumexis CEO, Doug Cline, suggests airlines could
earn “significant new ancillary revenue from offering a diversity of
products and services.”

Lou Sharkey, President and COO of Lumexis, points out that the
iPAX “costs less than a conventional overhead monitor system and weighs
half as much, so the revenue it generates drops directly to the bottom
line.”

There are plenty of airlines for Lumexis to target. “Some
three-fourths of single-aisle aircraft fly on short-to-medium haul
routes that could never before benefit from embedded IFE,” Cline says.

That’s a lot of passengers staring at the embroidered seat belt
instructions, tempted to pull on that one lose thread which unravels the
lot. These are hidden costs for airlines without IFE systems—spare seat
covers are not cheap.

But will airlines buy into the pitch?

Most carriers have employed a strategy based on the discipline of
high-revenue cabin footprint. To the layman, that means squeezing
profits out of every inch of cabin space. Airlines have increased this
footprint revenue by adding seats, but regulations limit how many seats
airlines can put on planes. To airlines, this means getting creative and
taking advantage of other revenue-generating opportunities like adding
inexpensive, cost-reducing, ancillary-revenue-generating IFE systems.

Lumexis is not making this argument alone. IFE suppliers from around
the world want to make it impossible for airlines to bore us in-flight.
The battle of the seat back has led to development of a wide
assortment of products, many of them tempting to airlines who would
never have considered IFE before.

Organizers of the Aircraft Interiors Expo have announced that this
year’s IFE zone will be 25% larger than last year’s—reflecting the
importance of these systems for today’s cabin design. Zero-footprint
cabin products will continue to grow and industry experts say wIFE
solutions, like iPAX, will become an essential element of the modern IFE
product mix.

That’s
what I told myself in 2011 when I decided that I was going to
officially end any relationship with physical exercise. I was convinced
that I no longer needed it. I was beginning to learn more about what I
was really passionate about – psychology, writing and becoming an
entrepreneur.

So why spend time on exercise?

Now, that didn’t mean I was giving up being healthy. After all, I knew the importance of diet on your willpower
and how eating healthy can help improve your productivity, energy and
confidence. But the time spent exercising seemed like a total waste.

But then I came across another study that proved just how important exercise was. Those who exercise on a regular basis are not just healthier, they are also more energetic, more productive and have more willpower.

So, given that I had devoted my life to the science of willpower, I knew it was time to get back to habitually exercising.

I
had tried and failed to set up a regular exercise routine more times
than I would care to admit in the past. So this time I approached it
completely differently. I did not rely solely on my willpower to put on
my running shoes. Instead, I turned to science.

Here is how I scientifically created a habit of exercise - and you can too!

DO NOT FAIL
Almost
every person who comes up with a new exercise routine tries to go from
zero exercise, to exercising at least 3 times per week – if not more. I
was no exception.

Every time I had tried to establish an exercise
habit, I would plan to wake up early every day and hit the gym before
work. Then I’d do it for a couple days, maybe even a week, and I would
feel great.

Then came “the day”. The day where I was tired, the
day where it was cold, the day where I came up with an excuse to hit the
snooze alarm and sleep past my workout. That day always set the
precedent that skipping a workout was okay, so I skipped another one. Then, before you know it, my exercise habit was dead.

But this time I had science on my side. I knew that the right behaviors are developed through consistency, not frequency. So I set a plan to workout just 1 day per week. Then I set my entire schedule up to ensure that no matter what I would not that day.

Once
I got used to 1 day per week, I added another day. Then after a month, I
added another day. The key was that I would never allow myself to add a
workout day until I knew I would be able to do it without fail.

When setting up your exercise habit, ensure that no matter what you will achieve it. It
does not matter if it is 1 day per week or 7 days per week. The
important thing is that you will never skip it. You cannot set up a
habit if you are not consistent. [1]

DO IT IN THE MORNING
There
are many reasons to work out in the evenings. It helps you unwind from a
stressful day at work. Your body is much more awake and ready to exert
itself. You may even be craving the endorphin rush of physical activity.
Or you may simply not be a morning person and the thought of waking up
that early makes you want to vomit.

But in order to set up the habit, here are 3 key reasons that you must go in the morning:

Life Happens at Night, Not in the Morning
How many times have you been invited to a breakfast party at 6am?

How many times have you had to attend your kid's soccer game before school?

Life happens. You will have to stay late to work, you will have to go to PTA meetings after school, and your coworkers will
invite you to a happy hour. These are all commitments that are tough to
get out of with the simple reason, “I can’t I have to go to the gym”. So it will be especially tempting to ignore Rule #1 and skip your workout.

Luckily,
life happens far less in the morning. You simply will not have the same
temptations to skip your workout in the morning as opposed to the
evening. You won’t need to turn down other commitments; you just need to
force your way out of bed and through the gym doors.

You Can Create the Right Environment
In
the evening, you really have no idea what your circumstances will be.
You may be tired, you may be stressed, you may want to chuck your gym
bag out the window and pretend you lost it (“ooops…guess I can’t go to
the gym today!”)

In the morning, however, you can create an
environment that will help you get to the gym. You know that you will be
tired and groggy, so what can you do to make waking up to go to the gym
easier?

You can set a coffee timer, make yourself your favorite breakfast,
or simply have your gym bag packed and your running shoes ready. Cues
like these will automatically trigger your body to begin your morning
routine of going to the gym. This will make it easier to establish the
habit. [1]

Your Willpower is the Highest in the Morning
We
have all been there. We have those especially hard days where we just
cannot summon the energy we need to make it to the gym. We have these
days because our willpower is like a muscle. If we use it to get through a stressful workday, we will have less energy left to make it to the gym.

This
is why our willpower is the highest in the morning. It hasn’t had to go
through the wringer of all of the draining tasks of the day, so there
is more of it available to force ourselves out of our beds and make it
through the gym doors.

HAVE A PURPOSE
Why do you want to set up an exercise habit?

Is
it because you genuinely want to make a change? Is it because you want
to become healthier, stronger or faster? Is it because you are training
for a goal like a 10K or a spot on a sports team?

The thing that
changed my perspective from “getting through” my exercise routine, to
genuinely enjoying it, was when I decided to train for the Spartan Race. In my first race I finished 334th and I wanted to do better.
So day-by-day, workout-by-workout I improved. I got faster, stronger
and am now at a point where I consistently finish in the Top 10. When I
found this purpose, workouts were no longer a chore; they became an
opportunity.

By having a genuine purpose for why you want
to exercise, you will make creating the habit easier. Thinking about
your purpose causes the area of your brain that is responsible for your
long-term goals to activate. This gives you a rush of willpower as you
begin to picture yourself achieving what you’re setting out to do. [

This
is the same rush of energy that we get when we read an inspiring story
or hear a motivational speech. It becomes less of a drag for you to get
out of bed and struggle through your workout.

So remember your purpose for getting out of bed and putting your running shoes on. This will not only help you make it to the gym, but help you enjoy it as well.

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
We have a natural desire for self-improvement.
This stems from the days that our ancestors were living in tribes.
Tribes were safe, so we wanted to ensure that we had a secure spot
within it. So we began to check our own behavior and compare it against
the best members of the tribe. This gave us motivation to set higher
standards for ourselves and try to live up to them. [

I tapped into this natural motivation by monitoring my progress.
When I saw how many miles I ran this week, I naturally wanted to run
more next week. When I saw how much weight I was able to lift in the gym
this week, I naturally wanted to lift heavier weights next week.

Take advantage of your inner drive to improve by tracking your progress.
Create a workout journal and write down all of your exercises. This may
seem tedious, but by tracking this progress, you will find a desire
within yourself to constantly improve.

You can find tools and strategies to monitor your progress in this article.

FOCUS ON ONE HABIT AT A TIME
You
know what it is like trying to set up a workout routine – it is not
fun. It is a grueling and painful process; especially at the beginning.
Most people make this even worse on themselves by also trying to deny
themselves tempting foods, cut back on drinking, or quit smoking.

To
help myself establish the workout habit, I focused all of my willpower
on waking up early to exercise. This meant that I didn’t worry about
eating healthy, I didn’t worry about cutting back on coffee, and if I
got invited to a happy hour, I obliged.

Willpower is a limited resource.
I knew I could tackle those other goals later, but first I just wanted
to establish the habit of regular exercise. Because I indulged, I did
not get much healthier. In fact, I may have actually gained fat in the
process of setting up the regular exercise routine. But the point is that I was able to set up the exercise routine. Once I established that habit, I moved on to the next habit of eating healthy.

Focus on establishing 1 new habit at a time.
If you try to completely overhaul your lifestyle you are doomed to
fail. The whole process will be overwhelming and you will never be able
to establish the new exercise routine. [5]

So
allow yourself to indulge in other vices as long as you remain
disciplined and consistent in setting up your habit of exercise.

FOCUS ON THE PROCESS NOT THE RESULT
Every time I had tried to set up an exercise routine before I was always focused on a result.

I wanted to run a marathon.

I wanted to get ready for beach season.

I wanted a “six-pack”.

So
I would train for a little while. Then I would either reach my goal, or
give up because it was hopeless. Then I would slip right back to my old
routine of not exercising at all.

This time, though, I focused on the process.
Rather than having an end goal, I simply wanted to establish the
process of exercising on a regular basis. Because of this, there was no
end. I simply continued to improve on my process, which I am still doing
today.

I no longer suffered the pain of having an unrealistic
goal like getting a six-pack in 8 weeks, or training for a marathon when
I could barely run a 5K. Now I was just trying to go to the gym 1 time per week. Then 2 times per week, then 3 times per week, then I was trying to run this 5K faster than the last 5K, etc.

Because
I was focused on the process, I was realistic. I only added what I
could manage. This helped me turn a goal into a habit and now a habit
into a lifestyle.

So do not set an unrealistic, results-based goal for your exercise routine. Focus on establishing a process that you can handle. Then,
when you have accomplished that, add a little bit more, then a little
bit more, etc. Pretty soon you will have established a habit. Then that
habit will become a lifestyle! 6

CONCLUSION
It has been a long journey since I set out to become a habitual exerciser. My biggest ally throughout the entire journey has been patience. So often we overload ourselves with exercise because we are impatient to get results. We want hard abs and we want them now! But this is completely contrary to what will actually get you results.

Great
things take time. It has taken me over 3 years of persistent effort to
go from zero exercise, to being on the verge of becoming a sponsored
athlete. And it all started with exercising 1 day per week. You
will likely live many more years, so there is no rush to begin
exercising every day. Remember, a river cuts through rock not because of
its strength, but its persistence.

— Willpoweredxar126http://www.blogger.com/profile/18156479389972587139noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4548857690951556968.post-55219888725080262142015-04-02T09:13:00.001-07:002015-04-02T09:13:15.154-07:00Classic Crocs Are Hoping to Make a Classically Ugly Comeback

1
Bloomberg has more on what the future commercials (out in May) will look like, via new CEO Gregg Ribatt:

Ribatt wants to remind people that Crocs was founded on
bright colors, whimsy, and comfort: One spot features a clog formed by
clouds; another is formed by beach chairs and umbrellas on a tropical
shoreline.
Apparently if you go to the Crocs store in Herald Square, you’ll see the original shoe “showcased prominently”:

Past the blazing, neon-green storefront sit display
tables covered in classic clogs. On the entryway’s wall, in front of a
towering two-story decal of clogs across the color spectrum, a sign
reads: “Classics never go out of style.”
Sorry, I know I’m here in New York City and I should be doing my
reporting due diligence, but double-checking that intel would require a.
going to 34th Street and b. looking at Crocs, and the last time I did
either of those things, I screamed.

Asia and Australia, travelling out with Emirates, and back with Etihad.
This gave me the perfect chance to compare two of the world’s
best-regarded premium cabins.

What surprised me most of all was the fact that Etihad absolutely wiped the floor with Emirates.
I should warn you that any issues I raise from here on in are about as
“First World Problem” as you can get (“my caviar was slightly too
salty”…), but forgive me – it is a premium cabin comparison.

The trip out in Emirates business class

In flight

My trip East (Manila via Dubai, with a stopover in Cyprus) was with
Emirates. The Dubai flight was 7 hours and 15 minutes, and the business
class cabin was poor by Emirates’ standards. It was an Airbus A330-200,
with the old-style business class, so dated seats that recline rather
than going fully flat. There was also very little division between you
and the neighbouring seat, other than a slightly extended armrest.

On a long haul business class flight with an airline of Emirate’s pedigree, this was a disappointment.

The in-flight food was acceptable without being exceptional. A key
difference between Emirates and Etihad (see below) is your ability to
order your food at will with Etihad (i.e. whatever meal is on offer, and
there are a range of choices, can be had whenever you want it, not when
it’s served). Impressively, this is also supplemented by a permanently
available selection of hot and cold snacks. Emirates sticks to a more
limited and rigidly-timed format (you eat when they’re ready, not when
you are).

The in-flight entertainment in the older Emirates cabin was also
mediocre. The selection was very good, but the screen was tiny and quite
difficult to watch in the glare of the cabin lights (which stayed on
for the duration of the flight).

Unlike all the other flights, no amenity kits were provided, which surprised me.

In fairness, the business class cabin from Dubai to Manila (8 hours)
was substantially improved in the Boeing 777-300. It had new, fully
reclining seats, much larger TV screens and a healthy division between
seats. That said, unlike Etihad, the window seats had another seat next
to them, which limits space and privacy somewhat, although there is a
button that brings up a screen between you and your neighbour (should
feeble attempts at polite conversation not be your thing).

In fact, in terms of the cabin itself, there wasn’t a great deal to
distinguish between the Emirates and Etihad Boeing 777 business classes,
although I would say that the Etihad product is superior (and the
Etihad business class in the Airbus 330 is frankly to be avoided).
Principally, however, it was the in-flight service and the lounges that
made Etihad the runaway winner.

The lounge

The Emirates business class lounge in Dubai is huge. While there was a
good spread of food and drink, the sheer size and number of people in
it made it feel rather more like a well-appointed staff canteen than a
premium lounge.

I do appreciate that Emirates needs to cater for business travellers
on a fairly industrial scale in Dubai, but there’s little doubt that
this very much leads to a loss of the “premium feel” that these lounges
should provide. As a result, there was very little attention from staff,
and there did not seem to be any a la carte dining options, it was all
down to the buffet.

Notably, and in stark contrast to Emirates, Etihad managed to strike a
near perfect balance between catering for the (relative) masses, while
maintaining an air of luxury to their business lounge in Abu Dhabi.

The trip back in Etihad business class

The flight

Returning, the Etihad experience was absolutely fantastic (Sydney to
Abu Dhabi, and then on to London). You are lavished with attention (and
food… and drink…) when you fly business class with Etihad.

The Etihad Boeing 777 business class seats are excellent: your own
little private pod, with an array of extras including a massage function
(also on Emirates 777s), a well-sized TV screen and a range of TV and
audio options. There is, of course, a fully reclining seat.

Putting the Etihad lounge superiority to one side (see below), there
were two real stand-out elements to the Etihad 777 business class
service cabin versus Emirates. The first was the individual seats next
to the window, which were fantastic. Your nearest neighbour is an aisle
away, giving you real privacy and comfort.

Second, the in-flight service is of the very highest quality. As
noted above, the meals are served off a menu, and while your order is
taken early, it’s then up to you when you actually want to have the food
delivered. On a 14 hour overnight flight, this is great: gone are the
concerns with eating the wrong meal at the wrong time, or waking up
halfway through a sleep for a three-course meal – it’s all in your
hands.

Beyond that, a limited a la carte menu provides constant access to a range of hot and cold snacks.

I can categorically say that Etihad long-haul business class exceeded all expectations.

The lounge

Etihad’s impressive hospitality is well reflected in its lounges. I
began in the well-appointed if modestly sized lounge at Sydney airport,
with a three course meal. While the portions were small, the food was
great.

The Etihad business class lounge in Abu Dhabi is on the same scale as
the Emirates lounge in Abu Dhabi, but remains absolutely fantastic.
Given its size, it could easily suffer from the same issues as Emirates’
Dubai offering. However, it manages to maintain a premium feel despite
its expanse.

This is helped in part by the a la carte dining, and free-to-use spa
(where I had a 15 minute head and shoulders massage: much needed after a
14 hour flight).

My only criticism, and it’s a fairly fundamental one, is the
comically limited bathroom facilities. I won’t go into too much detail
here, but suffice to say, be prepared to queue. At peak times, showers
will be particularly hard to come by, and this is something that does
need to be addressed.

And the winner is…

Well, you may just about have picked up from the title and
tone of this post that Etihad provided a substantially more impressive
business class service.

In fairness, the Emirates flight from Dubai to Manila was perfectly
acceptable, without going above and beyond what one might expect from
business class. The first flight, however, was poor.

Etihad’s supremacy is down to a consistently high quality business
class cabin, superb premium lounges, and the kind of in-flight attention
that goes some way to justifying the cost of business class travel. I
very much look forward to flying with them again.

Conclusions?

If I am ever faced with the option of similarly priced and similarly
convenient business class flights with Etihad or Emirates again, there’s
no doubt that I would make the whole journey with Etihad.

This is how business travel at its best should be – expectations exceeded in every way.

isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you think about
going out on a date. In fact, my ideal first date actually entails going
out for milkshakes at my favorite diner by the beach followed by taking
a stroll on the sand while watching the sun set.

As a heterosexual male in his early 20’s living in the 21st Century, my idea of dating looks something like this:

Find a VERY pretty girl.

Get VERY pretty girl’s number.

Ask her out on a date.

Repeat steps 1-3 with another VERY pretty girl if rejected.

Ask VERY pretty girl on a second date.

TIME TO PURSUE THAT if there is chemistry.

Ask VERY pretty girl to be my girlfriend when we are comfortable enough with each other.

Yay relationship* (*relationships come along with arguments and spending a lot of money).

Things don’t work out? Repeat steps 1-8 with a different VERY pretty girl.

Things work out. Pop the question and tie the knot.

As you can see, this is a pretty linear model as to what I thought
dating was about, which pretty much boils down to getting the girl of my
dreams, falling in love with her, and living happily ever after with
our new family. But my whole perspective on dating changed after
attending this year’s Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas.

The Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) in Las Vegas is considered to be
the largest rave out on the West Coast…and by God did it live up to
expectation.

I saw some of my favorite artists such as Calvin Harris and Chromeo,
made kandi bracelets and traded them with other people, making friends
in the process; and I even got the chance to see one of my childhood
friends. Not only that, but the entire Las Vegas Speedway was covered in
lights, giant ferris wheels and other colorful carnival rides lit up
the night sky, and fellow ravers were giving each other light shows with
their customized LED gloves (and did I mention that there were a ton of
lights around?)

Calvin Harris spinning at EDC Las Vegas 2014
The thing that stuck out the most to me, however, was this notion of
“PLUR” that was floating around the festival grounds. A new
acquaintance, who was part of my rave group, explained to me that this
acronym is the reason why everyone at an electronic dance music (EDM)
concert or festival is super friendly. Now I am fairly new to the rave
scence, having only gone to two other performances prior to EDC, and
didn’t have a clue as to what PLUR was.

SO WHAT IS PLUR?
For those of you who don’t know, PLUR stands for Peace, Love, Unity,
and Respect. This is the creed that ravers live by and can be seen
through their smiles, hugs, and even a special handshake.

The phrase got it’s start from DJ Frankie Bones who broke up a fight
at a rave in 1991 in New York saying, ““You better start showing some
Peace, Love and Unity, or I will break your $%^ing faces” (via JoJo Electro). The “respect” portion was added in not too long after.

While the words that come together to form PLUR are pretty self
explanatory, there is actually a lot more to it. Let’s break it down to
get a better understanding(via Peace & Loveism):

Peace – Letting go of fear and living at peace with oneself, one another, and the planet for a greater good

Love – As one learns to love oneself, one is able to love everyone else unconditionally

Unity – A mutual, corporate bond is formed resulting from the love and peace experienced with one another

Respect – Because of peace love and unity, one can accept others regardless of their beliefs or background

Taking a step back you can see this is a great motto to practice at
concerts and festivals. And I’ve personally seen it in action. My first
EDC was filled with countless high fives, warm hugs, and people even
checking up on me when I wasn’t feeling too well and lying on the
ground

But what if I told you that PLUR isn’t just for EDM fans, that it can
exist without all of electronic music and the kandi kids in the rave
scene?

RAVING & DATING?
Going back to my original line of thinking when it comes to dating…
it’s not always about pursuing the “happily ever after” life. Every
relationship needs some form of peace, love, unity, and respect.

“But, Bronson, I’m already in a loving relationship already filled
with peace, love, unity, and respect! Should I change my entire
lifestyle to accommodate PLUR?”

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! I’m not saying that you should change your
lifestyle to accommodate this movement. You don’t need to go to the next
EDM festival nearest you and give out as many hugs as you can, and you
don’t need to trade beaded bracelets to signify your respect with
another person. My point is that PLUR isn’t just for the ravers, it’s
for everyone.

Every relationship needs peace, or else both persons
would just be either way too pissed off or getting into shouting
arguments about who’s the better cook. Relationships need love
or else there would be no romance that would spice things up a bit.
This also includes tough love that isn’t always happy, but still shows
that you care for each other. Couples need unity in
order to make big decisions together such as tying the knot or moving in
together. And most importantly, every relationship requires respect. That means respecting each other’s boundaries, and being sure not to step over them.

PLUR is a universal concept that everyone can pick up on. You might
even be putting it to practice in your relationship and not even know
it, and that’s okay. PLUR is similar to the notion of “give and take”.
When it comes dating, a single person can’t have everything his/her way,
it’s more of a two way street where trade happens. The two people must
find a balance so that their relationship needs are met, while still
meeting their personal wants/needs.

IN CONCLUSION…
Before I finish I would like to note that there is talk amongst some
older and more experienced ravers about how the PLUR movement, more
specifically the main concept of PLUR, is dying within the rave scene.
Personally, I don’t see how it is dying seeing as how my experience at
EDC showed me that it was alive and well. But at the same time, I see a
chance for this movement to stay alive through the people and couples
who choose to practice it in their lives.

Coy Yiontis Architects have designed a contemporary renovation and addition to an original Victorian home in Balaclava, Victoria, Australia.

The architect’s description

The renovation and addition to this partly 2 storey home was designed
to accommodate an extended family of eight on a relatively modest site
within a dense urban context. A bedroom for each of the four
children, one for the parents and another possibly for grandparents,
generous living spaces and a swimming pool were key to the brief.

Situated in a relatively intact heritage streetscape in Balaclava the
project required an approach that restored the street presence of the
original Victorian weatherboard, badly disfigured over time and added
the spaces required by the family.

The strategy was to divide the house into two discreet buildings, old
and new, separated by a large central courtyard and reconnected by a
glazed link. The courtyard with its pool, gives the new building its
northern aspect and is conceived as an extension of the communal spaces
of the home which surround it on three sides. It also bestows the old
building a formal autonomy.

The original building fabric was stripped back to its salvageable
elements and the footprint reduced to form a seemingly freestanding
cottage at the front of the site. The exterior was then carefully
restored to its original Victorian character.

Internally spaces of the old house were reconfigured to become an
office, library/living room and guest bedroom. The volume of the
original structure was exploited in the new layout to create a grand
living space.

A new two storey timber clad building was constructed at the rear of
the property facing the old cottage across the courtyard and pool. Its
angular form, commenced as a response to planning constraints, evolved
into a subtle geometry that shaped the envelope and influenced the plan
of both buildings.

The family’s bedrooms are accommodated upstairs. At ground floor an
irregular open plan of living space flows around large kernels of
service space. A glazed link with built in daybed borders the pool
exploiting the morning sun.

The original entry was eschewed for a new access sequence leading
from the street, down the eastern side of the original house and into
the central courtyard. At this point, one is embraced by the home. Full
height glazing to three sides allows views into all parts of the ground
floor. Entry to the home is via the solid “front” door into the new
building.

Should weather permit, glazed panels slide away to open the house out
completely, integrating indoor and outdoor spaces. Travertine unifies
the floor plane, internally and externally. Timber is celebrated in the
beautifully crafted cladding and interior panelling.

This is not a big house. Considered planning and the integration of
indoor and outdoor achieve a generosity and variety of communal spaces
for the family at odds with the actual size of the building. Private
areas are restrained and humble. It is an urban home that functions
successfully for a multi-generational family and its evolving needs.

The island
is Southeast Asia’s financial hub and, in recent years, has seen growth
in the private banking industry that has attracted foreigners to
highly-paid positions with global companies’ regional offices. It is the
most expensive place to own a car and buy clothes.

This is the second straight year Singapore topped the Economist Intelligence Unit’s World Cost Of Living Survey. Every
two years, the survey compares prices in roughly 160 different service
and product categories such as transportation, rent and food. Here’s a
look at the other nine most expensive cities:

looks hit the Oscars red carpet, we’ve narrowed down our top picks
below. (Don’t see your favorite? Be sure to share your thoughts in the

Jason Merritt/Getty
Sarah Kinonen, Editorial Assistant: I’ve fallen head over heels with Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike’s scarlet-hued
scalloped strapless Givenchy Haute Couture number. I love the gown’s
textured rose design, her monochromatic matching heels and her glamorous
updo. Pike took a risk with this look, and it totally paid off: It’s a
much bolder look than what we’ve been seeing on her all award show
season. Plus, I still can’t believe the actress just had a baby — you’d never know it in this sexy number.

Catherine Kast, Style Writer: I’ll admit that when Emma
first hit the carpet in this custom Elie Saab Haute Couture gown, I
wasn’t in love with it (I really wanted her to pick this winged
Valentino gown that editor Alex Apatoff chose for her). But after seeing it from a few different angles (hello, the back) and examining her Tiffany & Co. cuffs up close
I grew to love it. Some might think that this chartreuse long-sleeved
gown might have felt a wee-bit mother of the bride, but Emma herself is
so far from that it’s almost comical. She’s a young spunky red-haired
nominee who favors unforgettable fashion moments (remember the onesie at the Globes and a smoking-jacket inspired gown
at SAGs?). Would I myself wear chartreuse? Probably not. But if I were
Emma Stone, I’d probably be daring and clever enough to go for it.

Andrea Lavinthal, Style and Beauty Director: Love her or hate her, you have to admit that Gwyneth Paltrow
always wears something worth talking about on the red carpet and this
pale pink Ralph & Russo Couture one-shoulder gown was no exception.
The custom-made design was adapted from a look on the Spring/Summer 2015
runway and features a dramatic oversize rose. On anyone else, the dress
may have come off as “Dynasty spring formal” (which is how one editor here described it), but I think Paltrow pulled it off like a pro and I love how she styled it with Anna Hu statement earrings and sleek hair.

Alex Apatoff, Senior Style Editor: I’m not going to
lie to you, there was no one look on the Oscars red carpet that had me
sending “🙌 🙌 🙌” to all my friends. Actually, this year, I thought the
guys brought it much more in the style department than the ladies. But
Marion came closest to wowing me on all fronts: Her Dior Haute Couture
Brittany Talarico, Style News Editor: Everyone thought Julianne Moore would be the one to wear Tom Ford, but Reese Witherspoon
totally surprised me when she hit the red carpet in this
black-and-white dress. It was one of the only dresses that screamed “I’m
at the Oscars!” and it made her body look absolutely flawless. (She has
a Barbie-size waist!) Her center-parted waves and statement earrings
were the perfect finishing touchings. It might not have been the wild choice I was predicting for the star, but she was definitely the definition of glam.

fashion certainly didn’t disappoint. There were a bunch of super fancy
custom gowns (including Emma Stone’s Elie Saab and Rita Ora’s Marchesa),
a few straight-off-the-runway numbers (shouts to Keira Knightley’s
Valentino confection), and 6,000 pearls on a single dress (we’re lookin’
at you, Lupita Nyong’o).

It’s never a question of whether Emma Stone will be on the best dressed
list; the only question is what exactly she’ll choose to inevitably land
on said list. Tonight, it was a custom long-sleeved Elie Saab number in
a uniquely gorgeous golden chartreuse shade. You can never go wrong
with a redhead in green. Especially if that redhead is Emma Stone.

Digital lifestyle publication Rue magazine released their 25th issue
this week, all about small spaces. Between their editors' smart ideas
and tips from three real New York City studio dwellers, the issue is
ripe with inspiration for living small.

Here are some of our favorite tips:

Nesting tables are a space-saver. They can be collapsed to maximize
floor space, or pulled out when extra company is over. In the issue,
Rue Art Director (and blogger at Design Conundrum) Maia McDonald picks her favorites.

Turn books around, their spines facing away from you, to visually
de-clutter a bookshelf. Photographer and mixed-media artist Emily
Johnston thinks it makes her East Village studio space more restful for
sleeping.

Large-scale prints of landscapes and cityscapes can feel like windows and open up a small room, as seen here in Emily's kitchen.

Try hanging a hammock indoors to make use of vertical space and
have a fun spot to host spry guests. The hammock in Emily's bed nook
makes the space a "lounge" and gives another place to entertain friends
or catch up on reading.

Be thoughtful about what's on display. Not all storage can be
concealed in a small space. Emily uses open shelving in the kitchen, but
hides clothes behind a curtain.

Think of every surface as an opportunity. Dru Ortega, part of the
PR team for One Kings Lane, uses the windowsill in his Long Island City
studio as a mini cocktail station when he entertains.

When building an art collection, start small and keep it personal.
Dru and his One Kings Lane colleagues believe that an art collection
should be a layered visual timeline of your past.

Don't let a small space dictate how you live. Artist Caroline Z
Hurley uses the kitchen in her West Village apartment to host dinner
parties.

Always make your bed (even if it's lofted). Caroline swears that even a tiny mess looks so much messier in in a small space.

And a tip for homes of any size... bring in something living.
Plants and flowers brighten any space, says Caroline. Scale the plant to
your space (we love this tiny potted plant in her kitchen).

Sticking with all-white in an interior space has a lot of advantages.
Light and airy, you'll be left with bright spaces that feel refreshing
and peaceful. Those who rent will find solace in being able to work with
can't-paint white walls. Not having a lot of colors in a space allows
the people to become the paint that splashes colorfully on your home's
palette. But creating stunning all-white rooms isn't as easy as simply
leaving out the color. Here are the best 5 "rules" to consider when
crafting an all-white (or nearly all-white) room.

1. Focus on texture
If you're not going to have a lot of visual stimulation with color
in your rooms, you're going to want to fill in that gap with texture.
Seek out surfaces like rugs and throw blankets with thick, rough or
interesting textures. White-wash textured furniture pieces to add to the
room.

2. Mind your surfaces (and know your stains)
Whether you have kids or not, a white room is a magnet for stains.
But you shouldn't avoid an all-white room just because you're a little
on the clumsy side. Just invest in materials that resist stains or are
easily cleanable. Upholstery for the outdoors and/or stain guards can be
used for upholstered furniture. It's also smart to know how best to
clean your surfaces before you bring them into your space (and
before you spill anything). But don't forget about your white walls,
baseboards and window trim — get on a regular cleaning schedule so they
don't end up looking dirty.

Taking the Guesswork Out of Stain Removal

3. Consider more stuff
Again, with so little interest in the way of bold hues, you've got
to add in interest in other ways. Like with texture, as mentioned above.
But also with, and this might be a bit controversial to say, stuff. Not
necessarily with more stuff, though that can help. No, we're
talking about the art of layering, and how when you're working
predominantly with only a handful of shades of white, you can use
layering to create a lot of interest in a room.

How to Pull Off the Art of Layering in Interiors

4. Choose the white right
Like any paint color, you're going to want to really be picky when
it comes to the shade of white you use on your walls or or furniture,
for the wrong paint color can make a whole room seem dingy or even too
sterile. Finding the right white for your space will mean looking to a
trusted list of paint colors that others have had success with and then
bringing home samples to look at in your space under all light

I can’t believe we’re STILL talking about Kanye West’s NYFW Adidas show

from last week. But that is (legitimately) the genius of Kanye West:
he’s usually the most interesting person in a dull world. Yes, he’s
crazy. Yes, he’s a delusional megalomaniac.
But still… we’re talking about him. Even people who think he’s a
fashion fraud are still talking about him. Take Kelly Cutrone, the
famous fashion publicist and judge on ANTM. Cutrone has a hate-on for Kanye and Kim Kardashian. Last year, she told the NYDN that there’s no one “who really works in the fashion industry who gives a flying f— about Kanye West.” She said that Kim and Kanye “have no influence in the fashion world whatsoever.” Cutrone was telling Hard Truths and most of you loved it. Now she’s back with her thoughts on Kanye’s Adidas show:

Kelly Cutrone, founder of fashion public relations firm
People’s Revolution, didn’t hold back her opinions when it came to the
rapper’s latest collaboration. “I’m not into his fashion thing,” she
told PEOPLE Now. “I think he’s fine as a rapper. I think he’s a joke as a
fashion designer.”

When asked if she at least liked the shoes in the line, Cutrone
answered bluntly, “I mean, it’s not, he’s not legit. Have you seen the
product?” she said. “Didn’t he have his own line in London, which was a
disaster that he spent $10 million to do, that no one wore?”

The fashion publicist goes on to explain exactly why she thinks the
rapper should stay in the music industry and leave the designing to the
professionals. “I just think that you should stay focused at what you’re
good at. Just because you’re a good rapper doesn’t mean you’re going to
be a good fashion designer,” she told PEOPLE. “I mean, we’ve seen that
over and over. Sean John is a really successful line, but you know, no
one in the fashion industry is waking up and going, ‘Hey did you get
that … did you like, trade up your Moncler for your Sean John?’ No.
Nobody’s saying that.”

[From People]

Eh. I enjoy some Goop-esque snobbery as much as the next blogger,
but I do think Cutrone is being unfair… to Sean John!! Sean John is a
huge label and go-to sportswear/lifestyle for a lot of people.
Sportswear is a multi-billion dollar industry, and maybe the real snobs
should sniff their noses at the stupid couture lines that only get worn
by 22-year-old, white, size-2 ingénues who get to borrow it (not buy
it). But yeah, Cutrone’s words about Kanye… very interesting.

Incidentally, I mentioned in some of my previous coverage of Kanye’s
line that it looked like some of the runway models were wearing
bulletproof vests. Turns out, I was right. Kanye designed some
kevlar-like vests for the Adidas line. Fashion + social commentary?
And he made a toddler-sized one for North too.
can’t wait for the winners to be announced, we are especially anxious to
see what the stars will be wearing!

Based on their past red
carpet ensembles, here are some predictions of what we might see our
favorite stars rocking at the Oscars this year.

Julianne Moore always looks great on the red carpet, but we think this strapless Dennis Basso
dress would really make a statement. The burgundy color and sequin
detail will sparkle in the spotlight onstage if Moore snags the Best
Actress award for "Still Alice."

Rosamund Pike's a bit of a wild card, but you can't go wrong with this navy blue Zac Posen gown! All the "Gone Girl" star needs are a few flashy accessories and she's set.
And that cinched waist is perfect for her to show off her stellar post-baby bod.

With Reese Witherspoon’s amazing figure, this Oscar de la Renta gown would really show off the "Wild" star's sexy curves. Plus, Reese always always looks gorgeous in color -- think Elle Woods' bright style.

Patricia Arquette loves to stick with timeless ensembles, so we think this Zac Posen gown will definitely look great on the "Boyhood" star. You can't go wrong with something sophisticated and chic!

With Emma Stone’s amazing slim figure, we think this Ralph Lauren dress would look like perfection on her. The beaded detail of the dress stays true to the "Birdman" star's edgy style.
But these ladies aren't the only stars we're looking forward to
seeing on the red carpet -- click "Launch Gallery" above to see more of
our fashion predictions for the Best & Supporting Actress nominees!

producer, DJ—the world’s highest paid, no less—and now, Emporio Armani
underwear model.

That’s right. The 31 year-old Scottish hottie isn’t just showing off
his musical prowess—he’s got the model looks, and the bulge to back it
all up.

While the musician is a newbie at the modeling game, the Daily Mail reports
that Giorgio Armani himself has faith in him: “Calvin Harris is a truly
cosmopolitan, dynamic young man who is capable of attracting the masses
with his music and energy,” he noted. “He isn’t a model by nature, and
this creates a more sincere and engaging bond with the public.”

Harris, who will also represent Armani’s watch and eyewear lines,
could not be more excited: “It’s incredible to be working with Mr Armani
and his team at Emporio Armani,” he said. “I feel an affinity to the
brand ethos and have been a long time admirer of their designs.” And we
will surely be long time admirers of the black-and-white Boo George
shots.

Federico Babina has released ARCHINOWHERE, a “series of illustrations that
represent a parallel universe where past, present and future
intertwine” to present a fantastical collection of “realistic yet
unreal” architectural visions. The playful graphic, as Babina describes,
“maintains a balance between illustrated architecture and an
architectonical illustration” to relay imagined stories built on a
foundation of contemporary ideals.

MANILA, Philippines – It was a fairytale wedding fit for a princess – or rather, one of Manila's sought-after stars, who married her prince – Senator Chiz Escudero at Balesin Island Club, February 15. dress by Ezra Santos. It was an intricate creation featuring a
sweetheart neckline, delicate overlays and a cinched-in waist.
said this of her dress: “I want it (the gown) very simple...I want it
to be something like Grace Kelly's. Siyempre as an artista, you always show a lot of skin. So I just want to be very conservative on that day. Just very simple and timeless yung dress, na even if you look at it years from now, hindi mahihiya. (You won't be ashamed of it.)"
Makeup artist Albert Kurniawan posted a photo of Heart's wedding makeup look:

The look enhances, not obscures Heart's natural beauty, focusing on making her eyes pop, and featuring a healthy, rosy glow.

Heart wore a small headpiece, so hairstylist Jerry Javier created a
simple bun that kept all the focus on Heart's dress and features.

A sweet touch to Heart's overall look, also shared by Jerry on Instagram – this detail on Heart's bouquet:
Stylist Kam Ocampo posted a photo of Heart's Christian Louboutin heels.

"Way better than glass slippers. #ChizHeart21515#chizheartlovefinally#BalesinLove," she wrote.

Later, Heart changed into a more relaxed dress, reportedly by Mark Bumgarner, for the grand reception:

The road to Heart Evangelista's wedding day to Senator Chiz Escudero
was a bumpy one – from the conflict with her parents earlier in the
relationship – they didn't approve of the senator –
to the most recent issue surrounding the booking of her wedding venue,
Balesin Island Club. But all those faded into the background just in
time for her wedding day Sunday, February 15, with Heart having given a heartfelt message of love to her parents.
